He married this Julia—somebody who came here and taught school. She just wasn’t our kind of people, you know. Well, when he married her, we didn’t ask her to our parties and we didn’t see him for a long time. It wasn’t that we didn’t like her, you know; we just never thought of her because she wasn’t our kind. We knew she wouldn’t enjoy us, and we wouldn’t have enjoyed her either.

The couple was relegated again to upper-middle class. Subsequently, they became members of a clique composed of mobile couples like themselves who were trying to pattern their behavior after that of upper-class cliques.
